Phase One have just announced the release of the 80mm Mark II lens for the XF Camera System, and having just taken delivery of ours, we wanted to test it alongside the previous version to see the advantages.
Phase One state that the “80mm f/2.8 Mark II Blue Ring lens is a new optical design of the standard focal length. The new lens design utilises an aspherical element to reduce light and sharpness falloff, while the overall design improves contrast and clarity.”
Below you will see our initial samples looking at the areas of improvement to the Mark II (if you like that kind of thing…)
Aspherical Element

This is the un-cropped side-by-side comparison of the two lenses, Mark I on the left and Mark II on the right. We can see the effect of this new aspherical element in the corners and edge of the frame.

Improved Contrast and Clarity

A subtle improvement for sure, but it’s nice to see any improvements made where they can be to offer ultimate image quality. If the 80mm is a go-to lens for you, and you’re looking for the utmost performance, then the Mark II is available now for test and for purchase. Get in touch to arrange with one of the team!
The original 80mm will remain as a lighter weight option alongside the Mark II (which is closer in size/weight to the 110mm).
